Caterham School
Founded in 1811 by John Townsend, Caterham School is a prestigious co-educational day and boarding institution located in Surrey, England. Originally established to provide education for the sons of Congregational ministers, the school has evolved over the centuries, becoming fully co-educational in 1995 following a merger with Eothen School for girls. Today, Caterham serves approximately 1,100 pupils aged 3 to 18, including around 200 boarders, and is renowned for its commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and holistic development.
Set on a picturesque 200-acre campus overlooking Harestone Valley, Caterham offers state-of-the-art facilities, including a modern science block, performing arts centre, and extensive sports amenities. The school’s ethos emphasises “education for life,” blending traditional values with forward-thinking approaches to prepare students for the challenges of the modern world.

Caterham School offers both full and weekly boarding options, providing a nurturing and inclusive environment that fosters personal growth and independence. Boarders reside in one of three dedicated houses: Beech Hanger House for girls, Townsend House for junior boys, and Viney House for senior boys. Each house is staffed by a dedicated team, including a Head of House and matrons, ensuring comprehensive pastoral care and support.
A typical day for boarders includes structured academic sessions, followed by a variety of co-curricular activities and social events. Evenings are spent in a relaxed atmosphere within the boarding houses, where students can unwind, complete homework, and engage with peers. Weekends offer a range of activities, from on-site sports and arts programmes to excursions to theatres, museums, and attractions in London and the South East.
Weekly boarding is a popular option, allowing students to experience the benefits of boarding life during the week while spending weekends at home. This flexibility supports families balancing busy schedules and provides students with a well-rounded educational experience.

Caterham School is recognized for its strong academic performance and innovative approach to education. In 2024, 85% of GCSE grades were between 9 and 7, while 71% of A-Level grades were A*/A, and 92% were A*-B . The school’s commitment to academic excellence is complemented by a forward-thinking curriculum that integrates technology and fosters critical thinking.
As an Apple Distinguished School and recipient of the EdTech 50 award, Caterham leverages cutting-edge technology to enhance learning experiences. The school’s emphasis on digital literacy prepares students for the evolving demands of higher education and the modern workforce.
Beyond academics, Caterham offers a broad range of co-curricular activities, including sports, music, drama, and community service programmes. This holistic approach ensures that students develop not only intellectually but also socially and emotionally, embodying the school’s mission to provide an “education for life.”
