Charterhouse School
Founded in 1611 by Thomas Sutton, Charterhouse School is one of the UK’s most historic and prestigious independent boarding schools. Originally established in London, the school relocated to its current 250-acre campus in Godalming, Surrey, in 1872. The move was influenced by the Public Schools Commission’s recommendations and led by Headmaster William Haig Brown . The campus features impressive facilities, including 17 grass sports pitches, 3 full-sized Astroturf pitches, an athletics stadium, a sports centre, 24 tennis courts, and a 9-hole golf course.

Boarding at Charterhouse is integral to the school’s ethos, fostering a sense of independence while ensuring robust pastoral care. The school comprises 15 boarding houses, each with its own unique character and traditions. New pupils are paired with older students to help them acclimate, and housemasters, tutors, and peer support networks provide continuous guidance.
Boarding life encourages students to engage in a variety of extracurricular activities, promoting personal growth and lifelong friendships. The supportive environment helps students develop resilience, leadership skills, and a strong sense of community.

Charterhouse maintains a strong academic record, with students achieving impressive examination results. In the 2024 cohort, 86% of A Level and IB Diploma grades were awarded A*-B (or equivalent), with 25% of A Level grades at A* . Additionally, 32% of GCSE results were at the top grade 9, compared to a national average of 5%. The school’s commitment to academic rigor is complemented by a wide range of co-curricular opportunities, enabling students to excel in various disciplines and prepare for future success.
